The Houseboat AMARYLLIS is very comfortable, somewhat rustic, in an early 1920’s mood, with an atmosphere that will provide a kind of ‘step out of time’ for visitors and guests.
A large verandah deck, living room with fireplace and dining room overlook the water and forested shores.
The four guest rooms also look out onto the St. Lawrence River and each has its own private, full bathroom.

The AMARYLLIS was built in 1911 for a Commodore who summered in the area. It was built of a riveted steel hull and wooden superstructure, weighing 216 gross tonnes overall.
There certainly were smaller houseboats around at the time.
These houseboats were optimal for taking advantage of the beautiful and peaceful River environment, anchoring almost anywhere they chose.

Houseboats similar to this may have been seen in India, on the lakes in Kashmir. More probably, it was simply a grand idea of the wealthy at the time.
At this floating house, guests would arrive in gleaming varnished inboard boats, chauffered by boatmen or by themselves. Cocktails and dinner would be served by staff working with the family.

The AMARYLLIS was acquired by the present family in 1928.
Sometimes fireworks would be set off after dinner, or if they were lucky ‘Northern Lights’ would appear in the sky.
Days were spent swimming and boating, with picnics and parties. It was a charmed existance.
Still is!

Though times have changed...!
